Celebrating Makar Sankranti with Telgu community in New Jersey, USA

Tuesday, January 13th, 2015, I celebrated the Hindu festival of Makar Sankranti with the Telugu (South Indian) community at the Sai Datta Peetham temple in South Plainfield, New Jersey. Makar Sankranti marks the transition of the sun into the constellation of Makara Rashi (Capricorn) on its celestial path. The day is also believed to mark the arrival of spring in South India and is traditionally celebrated as the beginning of the planting season, thus it is a traditional harvest festival. Fruits and vegetables are offered during this time to ensure a large and happy harvest. I was happy to participate in the festival and rituals with the Telugu community and I thank them for their hospitality. Pictures and video from the event are below.
