NYC Mayor's Office 1st Annual Diwali
Wednesday, 19 Oct 2016 - The NYC Hindu Coalition joined Mayor de Blasio at Gracie Mansion to celebrate the Hindu holiday of Diwali. The upscale tent and garden party was the first Diwali event for the Mayor's office and was attended by hundreds of NYC Hindus, Sikhs, Desis and city officials.
New Diwali Teacher's Guide Announced
Mayor de Blasio took part in a traditional lamp lighting ceremony, he then gave a short speech on the importance of educating the NYC public on the meaning of the Diwali holiday. The Mayor announced that the NYC school system had recently created a teacher's guide about the Diwali holiday which would be implemented in the coming school year. The crowd cheered "make it a Holiday... Holiday... Holiday", to which the mayor smiled.
Better Inclusion For Hindus Needed
Several Hindu organizations have been lobbying for the better inclusion of Hindu holidays such as Diwali and Holi into the public school curriculum of NYC. State Senator Leroy Comrie has introduced a bill to the state legislature that would establish Diwali as an official public school holiday in New York. At the event, fliers were passed around begging the question: "1 Million Hindu Voters, But No School Holidays".
NYC Hindus Take Day Off Holi
Many NYC Hindus will be participating in the 2nd annual "Take Day Off Holi" campaign on March 13th, 2017. The "Take Day Off Holi" campaign aims to show NYC officials that there is a large Hindu population in NYC and that we are serious about having our holidays recognized in some meaningful fashion. Empty seats = Hindu votes!
Hindu Solidarity
It is important that we continue to show solidarity and perseverance in gaining the same recognition as all the other mainstream religions in NYC. There are public holidays for Jews, Muslims and Christians, but nothing for Hindus, it is time for that to change.
