India Tour 2: Banglore Shiva Temple

While taking my spiritual trip in India 2016, I made a pilgrimage in the city of Banglore, this time to the famous Shiva temple located in the Murugeshpalya district of the city. This Shiva temple is world famous for its 65ft tall outdoor statue of Lord Shiva.  Shiva (also known as Rudra in the Vedas) is one of the most famous deities in Hinduism.  He makes up the “destruction” part of the modern Hindu Trinity (Trimurti) along with Brahma (lord of creation) and Vishnu (lord of preservation). Besides appearing in the Vedas as Rudra, Shiva has his own Purana, the Shiva Purana, and his legends appear throughout the famous Hindus epics of the Mahabharata and Ramayana.  Hindus who focus primarily on the worship of Shiva or called Shaivites.  Shiva’s major holiday is Maha Shivaratri (great night of Shiva) which takes place in the Hindu month of Phalgun (February-March).  Besides the large Shiva statue, the temple also features an underground passageway where pilgrims can worship various images of Shiva in his lingam (symbolic) form. This was my last stop in Bangalore before moving on to the next cities in my tour.
