India Tour 8: Meenakshi Temple

During my spiritual tour of India in 2016 I had the chance to visit the The Meenakshi Temple which is located on the southern bank of the Vaigai river in the temple city of Maduri in Tamil Nadu India.  It is dedicated to a form of the goddess Parvati named Meenakshi and her consort Sundareshwar who is a form of Shiva. The structure was built in the 14th century and went underwent several renovations through time, especially after the temple was raided by Muslims Commander Malik Kafur who led armies of the Delhi Sultanate. The temple features 14 gateway towers and many gold gilded sanctums as well as numerous sculpted pillars. The temple is a major pilgrimage destination for worshipers of Shiva but also features many narratives of Vishnu along with scrulpture and rituals where he is considered to be a brother of Meenasksho.  The temple also features many other Hindu and Vedic deities such as Lakshmi and Krishna. The temple attracts tens of thousands of visitors a day and is attended by over 1 millions devotees during the 10 day festival of Meenakshi Tirukalyanma.
